Campeche is one of Mexico’s best-kept secrets, with its colonial atmosphere, narrow streets, and pastel houses. The city is surrounded by walls that were built during the late 1600s to early 1700s in order to protect the city from Caribbean pirate attacks. The construction of the city walls took approximately 18 years to complete and much of the 8-meter high walls still exist today. Campeche was also named to the World Heritage List in 1999 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), which recognizes locations that preserve cultural and natural heritage around the world and are of outstanding value to humanity. Many tourists are drawn to the breathtaking archaeological sites scattered throughout the state as well as the city’s beautiful historical center. Museums, handicraft shops, night clubs, and restaurants offer a wide range of opportunities beyond swim, bike, and run.
